KTM Introduces Significant Upgrades Amid Financial Uncertainty

Red Bull KTM MotoGP team manager Aki Ajo has confirmed that the Austrian factory successfully met its winter development targets, unveiling several innovations during a high-intensity Sepang Shakedown test. Despite ongoing financial concerns, KTM continued to push forward, integrating multiple technical advancements into the RC16.

Successful Development Despite Financial Challenges

Speculation about KTM’s development capabilities arose due to the brand’s financial instability. However, factory test riders Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro actively participated in all three days of the Sepang Shakedown, testing visible and concealed upgrades, such as a redesigned rear seat unit and an improved exhaust system.

In an interview with Crash.net, Ajo addressed concerns about winter development:

“Yes, definitely,” he affirmed when asked if progress remained unaffected by financial issues.

“We are extremely satisfied with the work accomplished at the factory over the past months. Everything we planned has been implemented—or even exceeded expectations.”

Hectic Testing Schedule Brings Promising Results

Ajo described the Sepang Shakedown as “hectic” due to the number of evaluated upgrades. The rigorous testing process allowed the team to assess, validate, and refine the latest advancements.

“Now, we have another three days of testing at the Official Test, where we will double-check various elements,” Ajo explained. “We are currently in a favorable and competitive position.. With further testing, including at Buriram, we anticipate even more positive outcomes.”

Espargaro, who set the fastest time on day one, concluded the Shakedown in fifth place, trailing Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo by half a second. Meanwhile, Pedrosa finished ninth, 1.286 seconds off the leader.

Strategic Machine Allocation for the Official Test

Transponder data revealed that Espargaro was riding two machines that would later be assigned to Brad Binder for the upcoming Official Test. Meanwhile, Pedrosa tested the bikes intended for new factory rider Pedro Acosta.

KTM Eyes Ducati’s Dominance in MotoGP

When asked if KTM is ready to challenge reigning champions Ducati, Ajo expressed confidence in the team’s trajectory:

Our competitive drive is strong, and our primary objective is victory. Ducati has set the benchmark, but we strive to be even closer and, eventually, the number one manufacturer.”

Ajo acknowledged KTM’s progress since its MotoGP debut in 2017 and pointed out that the manufacturer ranked as the second-best team over the past two years.

We should acknowledge our accomplishments while striving for even greater success. The competition is fierce, with many teams operating what used to be called satellite teams but are now essentially second factory teams,” Ajo stated.

Tech3’s Role in KTM’s Evolution

Pedro Acosta showcased Tech3’s strength by securing nine podiums last season and narrowly missing out on fifth place in the world championship to Binder. Now, with Acosta gaining experience and Tech3 welcoming established race winners Maverick Viñales and Enea Bastianini, Ajo believes KTM can refine its approach in 2025.

“Having experienced riders like Maverick and Enea influences our testing strategy. When working with rookies, adjustments are necessary, but seasoned riders allow us to test more components and gather valuable comparisons,” Ajo elaborated.

“One of our key objectives is to establish closer collaboration with our second factory team, ensuring we operate as a unified unit.”

Four Factory Riders Strengthen KTM’s Prospects

Ajo emphasized the significance of having four high-caliber factory riders and highlighted his familiarity with three of them—Brad Binder, Pedro Acosta, and Maverick Viñales. He expressed optimism about building a strong working relationship with Bastianini.

“Knowing our riders well fosters mutual respect and clear expectations, which is crucial for overall team performance,” Ajo noted.

Optimizing Performance Beyond Technical Innovations

While technical upgrades remain crucial, Ajo underlined that optimization goes beyond introducing new parts. Enhancing team operations and ensuring riders receive optimal support is just as vital.

“We are refining all areas—chassis, engine performance, and electronics. However, development is not solely about adding new components; it’s also about maximizing our existing package,” Ajo explained.

“This includes how our team collaborates and how we provide the best support for our riders.”

Upcoming Official Sepang Test

The official Sepang test, featuring the full roster of 2025 riders, is scheduled from Wednesday to Friday. This session will be crucial for KTM as they continue their pursuit of MotoGP supremacy.
