Bangladesh’s early exit from the Champions Trophy has raised significant concerns about the team’s approach to high-stakes tournaments. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believes that instead of personnel changes, the squad needs a shift in mindset to perform consistently on the global stage.

Calls for Responsibility Among Players

Following Bangladesh’s disappointing campaign, Shanto emphasized the need for the current players to take greater responsibility for the team’s success. He insisted that frequent personnel changes would not resolve the fundamental issues that have plagued their performances in major ICC tournaments.

“We have to be more responsible as a batting unit,” Shanto stated during the post-match press conference. “We cannot keep chopping and changing the squad. The existing players must be given more opportunities to prove themselves. I feel we are taking things too lightly. We must step up and take responsibility.”

Backing Mushfiqur Rahim Amid Struggles

Despite Mushfiqur Rahim’s recent struggles with the bat, Shanto voiced his support for the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman. Since the 2023 World Cup, Mushfiqur has managed only one ODI half-century and has seen his batting average drop to just over 31. His recent dismissals, including a first-ball duck against India, have fueled discussions about his place in the squad.

Speculation arose about a possible replacement, with Mahmudullah potentially coming in for Mushfiqur and Jaker Ali taking over wicketkeeping duties. However, instead of making such changes, the team opted to drop Soumya Sarkar from the top order, pushing Shanto one slot up.

“There’s no automatic selection in this team,” Shanto explained. Soumya is positioned in the top order, whereas Riyad (Mahmudullah) occupies a spot in the lower-middle order. Keeping Soumya would have forced us to adjust the entire line-up. Riyad’s recent form made him a necessary inclusion. As for Mushfiqur, his wicketkeeping is crucial, and I have no doubts about his ability to bounce back.”

Bangladesh’s Middle-Order Collapse and Tactical Missteps

Bangladesh’s biggest downfall in their final group-stage match was their inability to counter offspinner Michael Bracewell, who dismantled their middle order. The team struggled with an overly defensive approach, accumulating around 30 overs’ worth of dot balls before attempting aggressive strokes under pressure.

Shanto acknowledged that their score of 236/9 fell well short of a par total on a batting-friendly pitch.

“Shanto acknowledged that they should have posted a total of at least 280-300 runs on that pitch. He praised Bracewell’s bowling but admitted that their dismissals were too soft. Poor shot selection and lack of execution cost us. We must plan better and improve our batting approach.”

The team’s failure to build partnerships in the middle overs exposed their lack of adaptability. Shanto emphasized that they must develop the habit of scoring 300+ runs consistently to compete with top-tier teams.

Bangladesh’s Struggles in ICC Tournaments

Bangladesh’s underwhelming performances in global tournaments continue to be a significant concern. While the team has found success in home conditions, they have struggled to win overseas, particularly in ICC events.

“We only win at home; we don’t perform consistently in foreign conditions,” Shanto stated. “To excel in ICC tournaments, we need collective improvement. Some days the top order clicks, other days it’s the middle order. At times, our fielding stands out. But unless we bring all aspects together, we cannot expect consistent success.”

Shanto Stands by Champions Trophy Ambitions

Despite the disappointing exit, Shanto reaffirmed Bangladesh’s ambition of winning the Champions Trophy, stating that the team must continue to dream big.

“We came here to win, not just to participate,” he said. “If we don’t aim for ambitious goals, we won’t challenge ourselves to improve. While we didn’t get the desired result, we must now shift our focus to the next game and continue working towards improvement.”

The Road Ahead for Bangladesh Cricket

As Bangladesh looks ahead, the focus must be on consistency, strategic improvements, and adapting to overseas conditions. With the right mindset and collective effort, the team can aim for stronger performances in future ICC tournaments. Shanto’s call for responsibility and long-term stability within the squad could be the key to unlocking Bangladesh’s full potential on the world stage.
