Honda’s Innovative Approach to Vehicle Manufacturing
Honda is set to redefine automobile production in North America with its groundbreaking flexible vehicle manufacturing system in Ohio. The company will integrate the production of internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid, and fully electric vehicles (EVs) on the same assembly lines, ensuring agility in response to market fluctuations.
The first model to roll off the revamped production lines will be the fully electric Acura RSX SUV, scheduled for release later this year. This marks a significant milestone in Honda’s commitment to electric mobility, part of a $1 billion investment in three Ohio-based manufacturing plants.
Honda’s $1 Billion Investment in U.S. EV Hub
To cement its role in the EV revolution, Honda is transforming its Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant, and Anna Engine Plant into its U.S. EV hub. This strategic investment will enable Honda to continue producing ICE vehicles while simultaneously scaling up EV manufacturing.
According to Bob Schwyn, Honda’s senior vice president of development and manufacturing in America, the company is enhancing its EV production capacity and reimagining its entire manufacturing approach. This includes incorporating human-friendly processes and sustainable production practices.
Honda’s Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
As part of its “Triple Action to Zero” initiative, Honda strives for carbon neutrality, clean energy adoption, and resource circulation to achieve zero environmental impact by 2050. The transformation of its Ohio facilities will serve as a blueprint for other North American and global plants looking to adopt similar eco-friendly manufacturing methods.
Honda’s Ohio EV hub will produce the futuristic Honda 0 Saloon and Honda 0 SUV prototypes, which will be unveiled at CES in January. This highlights Honda’s forward-thinking approach to EV innovation.
Honda and LG Energy Solution’s $3.5 Billion Battery Plant Investment
In addition to its EV manufacturing expansion, Honda has partnered with LG Energy Solution to invest $3.5 billion in a state-of-the-art battery production facility in Jefferson, Ohio. The total projected investment in the plant is expected to reach $4.4 billion, with an annual production capacity of approximately 40 gigawatt hours. The plant will manufacture high-capacity batteries for Honda and Acura electric vehicles, further strengthening Honda’s EV infrastructure.
Advanced Manufacturing Upgrades in Ohio
Honda’s Marysville facility will be the first in the world to assemble EV battery packs. To optimize production, the plant has been upgraded with robotic welding operations that allow EV bodies to be welded on the same line as ICE models. A dedicated battery pack installation area has also been created to streamline manufacturing.
Honda is also introducing more miniature battery packs for hybrid models. The company has positioned the hybrid battery assembly line closer to the installation area to meet growing demand and ensure efficient, high-speed production.
Cutting-Edge Megacasting Technology
A significant technological advancement in Honda’s Ohio facilities is the introduction of six 31-foot tall, 6,000-ton high-pressure die-casting machines at the Anna Engine Plant. These machines will megacast EV battery case parts, which will serve as the main structural frame for the floors of Honda and Acura EVs. This innovation marks Honda’s most significant die-casting endeavor and offers the flexibility to produce additional aluminum components for hybrid and electric vehicles.
Enhancements at the East Liberty Auto Plant
To further optimize EV production, Honda has installed a “battery pack mount mezzanine” at its East Liberty Auto Plant. This system allows EV models to temporarily disengage from the main assembly line for battery installation before seamlessly rejoining the line for final assembly. The facility has also been reinforced to accommodate the additional weight of EVs in the paint department, improving the overall production quality.
Honda’s Expansion into Canada’s EV Market
Beyond the U.S., Honda is also making strides in Canada’s EV sector. In April last year, the company and its joint venture partners announced a CAD 15 billion (USD 11 billion) investment to establish an EV supply chain in Canada. The plan includes a new EV manufacturing plant and a battery production facility in Alliston, Ontario. Set to begin production in 2028, the EV factory will have a capacity of 240,000 vehicles per year, while the battery plant will produce up to 36 GWh annually.
